Once again, the City of Weston has been recognized for its superior safety. The 2017 SafeWise Report ranked Weston as the #3 Safest City in Florida.
SafeWise considers itself to be the authority on safety and home security news. To identify the 20 safest cities in Florida, it reviewed 2015 FBI crime report statistics and population data, eliminating all cities with fewer than 3,000 residents. SafeWise then narrowed its list based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city.
Weston had 0.37 violent crimes and 6.21 property crimes per 1,000 people. Those figures are well below the national average of 3.83 violent crimes and 24.87 property crimes per 1,000 people.
What’s even more impressive is that Weston has the highest population of the cities on the list, with 70,000 residents. Of the top ten cities, all the others were under 30,000 residents. That fact was highlighted in the SafeWise Report:
“There’s a misconception that larger cities aren’t as safe as smaller ones, which isn’t always the case, and Weston—the third-ranked city on our list—proves it. With more than 70,000 residents, this Broward County community reported just twenty-six violent crimes. Forward thinking initiatives like Weston’s Citizen Observer Patrol (COP) Program no doubt help keep crime under control. Dedicated COP volunteers patrol their communities looking for suspicious activity, checking on unoccupied homes, and reporting potential safety hazards.”
The City of Weston commends the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District, under the leadership of Chief Kevin Butler, for their commitment to keeping our community safe.
However, Chief Butler stresses that a safe community still needs to be vigilant. He asks residents to: lock car doors, ensure vehicle key fobs are not left in the vehicle, close garage doors, and keep an eye out for suspicious individuals. “With everyone working together we can continue to keep Weston safe.”
The SafeWise Report is the latest safety accolade achieved by the City of Weston. In February 2017, the National Council for Home Safety and Security ranked Weston #2 in their Safest Cities in Florida listing. In January 2017, NeighborhoodScout ranked Weston as #24 in their list of Top 100 Safest Cities in the United States. And in May 2016, the home security and financial website CreditDonkey ranked the City of Weston as the #1 safest city in Florida.
In case you were wondering, the SafeWise Report ranked Longboat Key as the #1 Safest City in Florida. Rounding out the top twenty list were Indian River Shores, Parkland, Melbourne Beach, Marco Island, Tequesta, Indian Shores, Valparaiso, Highland Beach, Bay Harbor Islands, Cooper City, Sanibel, Winter Springs, Minneola, Satellite Beach, Oviedo, Indian Harbour Beach, Midway, and Punta Gorda.
