Young Drummer Wins National Award for Original Composition

Alessio Mazzi has been playing the drums since preschool. The Indian Trace Elementary fifth grader is now an award-winning composer. He won a Merit Award in the National PTA Reflections program for his original composition, Born A Musician.

Alessio says he has composed a few pieces over the years. Born a Musician was actually his third piece for Reflections.

“The theme was ‘What is Your Story.’ Born a Musician is about how I evolved from playing Elmo beats to Zeppelin and Queen,” shares Alessio. “I told my story through music and the many different ways I play music around my house, including furniture, pots and pans, my chest, my feet, and even my drums.”
He says it felt awesome to win the Merit Award. “It made me so happy to have an award from Nationals. I am very grateful and excited!”

Alessio plans to enter the contest again this year. “I will definitely be doing Music Composition and trying out Film Production.”

When he’s not playing his drums, Alessio plays soccer and swims competitively. Although he loves music, he thinks it will remain a hobby. “I want to study medicine and science, but I also want to be a soccer player like Paulo Dybala and an Olympic swimmer like Michael Phelps.”

Until then, Alessio will continue drumming, with classic rock being his favorite genre of music to play. He encourages other kids to pursue their passions as well.

“If you want to be where I am, never set a limit. You are good enough,” states Alessio. “All you need is to work hard and put effort to be the best of the best of the BEST of whatever you like.”

PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the following categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts.
Indian Trace Elementary School Principal Amy Winder says she is extremely proud of Alessio and his accomplishment. “We often get students who move on to the State level, and once in a while have a student place at the State level, but to have a National winner is extremely exciting. Alessio is such a talented musician. His family and entire school family are so proud of him.”
